
Afifa T.
Afifa is a sophomore at Columbia University School of Engineering, studying Applied Mathematics. She is a recipient of several STEM scholarships, including the Global Pega Scholars Technology and National Grid Diversity in Engineering Scholarships. She has experience in Computational Social Science and Data Engineering. She has participated in technical programs with various organizations, including America On Tech, Google, and Girls Who Code. Afifa performed research assessing the diversity and representation of African nations in the United Nations General Assembly, analyzing the factors necessary for sustainable buildings, nanotechnology research for sustainable batteries, and others.
Afifa wants to continue research in algorithm fairness and computational social choice and work in the data science field. Afifa believes we have to empower each other to build a diverse and equitable community in technology for people from all different backgrounds. In the future, Afifa hopes to use technology to make learning more accessible for students in under-developed and rural communities and use data to inform positive change in our world.
