AiC Program Updates

Here is a sneak peek at some of the upcoming changes for the 2022-2023 season.  Be sure to attend the next Affiliate Webinar in August for more details.

2022-2023 Season dates:

HS app dates: Sep 1 - Oct 20

CA app dates (only one app round): Dec 1 - Jan 24

EA app dates: Sep 1 - Dec 1

Removal of Certificate of Distinction:

Continue using the Rising Star category

Plans to introduce HS entrypoint into the AiC Community in near future

Educator Award updated description:

The NCWIT Aspirations in Computing (AiC) Educator Award identifies exemplary formal and informal educators who play a pivotal role in encouraging 9th-12th grade women, genderqueer, or non-binary students to explore their interest in computing and technology. Rather than being a teaching award, this award honors those who work inside and outside of classroom spaces to advocate for gender equity in computing by providing educational opportunities that are inclusive to--and supportive of-- women, genderqueer, and non-binary students.

Introducing Medals for Affiliate level awards:

Medals and personalized certificates will replace trophies for HS awardees at the Affiliate level.

AiC Coordinators - if you have any changes to your AiC Volunteer team lists (names and email contacts) send your updates to your RAM this month. We greatly appreciate your assistance!

AiC Stories - We Need Your Help

Thank you for your help in encouraging past recipients to share their stories!  We have received a few wonderful submissions but would love to receive more. NCWIT is encouraging Aspirations in Computing community members to raise their voices, share their experiences, and tell their stories to inspire others! We know that AiC Community members respond when someone directly reaches out to them. Share this opportunity directly with a past awardee that has inspired you and let their story inspire thousands. You can view an inspirational example submission from Sindhu Sivasankar here.

Aspirations Inspirations

Hi!  I'm Marissa Sorkin; I was an active member of the NCWIT community in high school from 2015-2018 and was a National Winner from Georgia in 2018. I wanted to propose a story coverage of the girls who are the faces of NCWIT Newsletter.  I'm the one in the very right corner, in the back. Every time I see a newsletter, I usually see my face and my friends! It's been kinda cool to see that.  I believe it would be nice to match the faces to stories. We all have taken different routes, but it would be insightful for other girls to recognize that we're not just random faces stamped upon the weekly newsletter-- we are the faces from the NCWIT Georgia chapter and all graduated from Lanier High School. We are either on our college journey still or starting to begin another chapter. And one way or another, we've been encouraged or inspired by the NCWIT program.

Perhaps we could organize a story together? Let me know what you think. I can pitch the idea to my friends if this interests you.  Additionally, Lanier High School has an intriguing history of inspiring women who also participated in the NCWIT awards, as we have a STEM program in which some teachers encourage us to apply for NCWIT each year. An example is Avery Evans, who had pursued a military career by attending the Air Force Academy, and is now currently in the recently formed U.S Space Force and is a 1st Lieutenant. Also, there will also be future power stars graduating from Lanier, as some girls were sponsored by State Farm to learn and achieve Google certificates in Data Analytics and/or have had high school internships at State Farm's Technology department. The school's First Robotics Team also received the Apple Grant that was advertised in the NCWIT newsletter.  I pitch this because I believe Lanier High School has a diversity of women who participated (or are currently!) in NCWIT and there are rich stories to tell about their successes or current chapter in life. NCWIT has an impact on our lives.

Have a great long weekend!
Kathy, Bridget, Edie, Eva, John, Kate, Jamie, Lauren, Lyn, Natalie, Susie, Susahnn, Tanner & TJ

One of our former Aspirations awardees- Kittson Hamill -  in Alabama (multi-year awardee) was just named a Hollings Scholar. I tagged NCWIT and NCWITAIC on a few of these. I think this is proof that Aspirations is inspiring students as early scholars to go on and push for exciting things in their collegiate career!  https://twitter.com/jgrayatua/status/1524677907108581376

If a second round of reviews is required, they will take place June 27, 2022 - July 1, 2022. Applications are reviewed and scored online at your own pace and detailed instructions are provided. You do not need technical experience to review AspireIT applications.

**NEW** AiC Stories

We all know that the stories our members have to share are the most powerful and inspirational tool we have. Thanks to support from Match.com and Novetta, AiC will be working with members to collect and tell their stories!

Community members will be encouraged to submit a video sharing aspects of their journeys in tech. All submissions will be reviewed and then posted to a private YouTube channel for the community, and bi-annually, six members will be selected as AiC spokespeople to further develop their stories into a multimedia campaign.

The goal is to lift the voices of our members - ALL MEMBERS - to inspire one another. The spokespeople will also inspire others and help promote the AiC program through social media, presentations, and professional video pieces. Find out more at https://www.aspirations.org/aic-stories

Aspirations Inspiration

Our wonderful San Antonio Coordinator, Barbara Hewitt recently shared this inspiring email she received:

I'm not sure if you remember me as we never met formally in person. In 2018 I graduated from High School and before my graduation I was selected as an honorable mention for the San Antonio Area Aspirations Award. I believe you helped to organize it and I was able to attend, you also sent out an email offering internships. I emailed you and you helped me with my resume a bit and then sent it out. Through your help, I began my first internship with Accenture Federal Services, which I attribute to jump-starting my career in computer science. I plan to move and start a full-time job as a software engineer in August. I wanted to thank you, as you are an essential part of the stories I share when I talk about how I got to where I am today. While you did not have to help modify my resume or extend your connections, you did and for that, I will forever be appreciative. I hope to continue passing it forward and working towards being able to help other women achieve their goals the way that you've helped me work towards achieving mine.

Have you heard a great story like this from your Aspirations award recipients?  Please let us know - we’d love to share other inspirational stories!

With Care and Gratitude,

Bridget, Edie, Eva, John, Kate, Kathy, Jamie, Lauren, Lyn, Natalie, Susie, Susahnn, Tanner & TJ

Portal Updates

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is now required to access all NCWIT Sites.

The NCWIT and, in particular, the Aspiration.org sites hold a tremendous amount of personal data - and the security of that data is of the utmost concern to us. Given the current cybersecurity climate, NCWIT has added MFA to all NCWIT sites.

What does this mean?

Starting last week, logging into any NCWIT/Aspirations site now requires an additional level of verification via our Okta single-sign-on (SSO) service. You can setup any or all of the following verification methods:

  • Okta Verify (an app that provides a randomly generated verification number)

  • Google Authenticator

  • Text Message

  • Voice Call

  • Email

  • Security Questions

What does this look like?

When you go to any of the NCWIT/Aspirations sites:

  • You will click the login button.

  • A Login screen will appear

  • You will enter your login information - the same username and password for ALL NCWIT/Aspirations sites.

  • You are prompted to verify your identity with one of the methods you have chosen.

    • To add additional verification methods, go to login.ncwit, org, choose settings from your account menu in the upper right, and edit your profile.

    • Clicking the down arrow next to the method will allow you to choose from the options you have set up.

  • Complete the verification, and you are in.

Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] with any issues or questions.

Weekly Update March 28 - April 1st

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

As of 3/28/22, the Aspirations Portal requires Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). We have more below on what to expect when you go to the site for the first time. This was established for the security of the site and data stored on it.

Highlights

  • Portal Updates - MFA

  • AspireIT Impact Award Opening

  • April 7th Monthly Webinar

  • Event Season Updates

  • AiC Messaging Corner

Portal Updates

MFA is now required to access all NCWIT sites, including aspirations.org.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) comes to NCWIT Sites

The NCWIT and, in particular, the Aspiration.org  sites hold a tremendous amount of personal data - and the security of that data is of the utmost concern to us. Given the current cybersecurity climate, NCWIT has added MFA to all NCWIT sites.

  • You will click the login button.

  • A Login screen will appear

    • Clicking the down arrow next to the method will allow you to choose from the options you have set up.

  • Complete the verification, and you are in.

Additional Notes:

  • You will see a message appear when you login prompting you to add MFA.

  • We are working to ensure that you are able to login once, and have that login follow you across NCWIT/Aspirations sites, versus having to login to each site if you happen to be working across more than one at a time.

  • We have set up an option to “trust your device” for a certain period of time before having to verify your identity again.

  • We have also set up an automatic logout if inactive on the site for a set period of time.

The implementation has fully rolled out. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] with any issues or questions.

EVENT SEASON UPDATES

National Award Virtual Event

Did you join us for the National Award virtual event held on March 12th? If not, we're excited to share the program and video of the event. Be sure to watch the video submissions of our top 40 young technologists (beginning approximately 30:15) to be inspired and impressed with their achievements so far. There is so much more to come from all of our recipients.

Portal Updates

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) comes to NCWIT Sites

The NCWIT and, in particular, the Aspiration.org  sites hold a tremendous amount of  personal data - and the security of that data is of the utmost concern to us. Given the current cybersecurity climate, NCWIT will be adding MFA to all NCWIT sites over the coming weeks.

What does this mean?

Starting next week, logging into any NCWIT/Aspirations site will require an additional level of verification via our Okta single-sign-on (SSO) service. You will be able to setup any or all of the following verification methods:

  • Okta Verify (an app that provides a randomly generated verification number)

  • Text

  • Voice Call

  • Email

  • Security Questions

What will this look like?

When you go to any of the NCWIT/Aspirations sites:

  • You will click the login button.

  • A Login screen will appear

  • You will enter your login information - the same username and password for ALL NCWIT/Aspirations sites.

  • You will be prompted to verify your identity with one of the methods you have chosen. Clicking the down arrow next to the method will allow you to choose from the options you have set up.

  • Complete the verification, and you are in.

Additional Notes:

  • We are finalizing this implementation with the developers this week - once implemented, you will see a message appear when you login prompting you to add MFA.

  • We are working to ensure that you are able to login once, and have that login follow you across NCWIT/Aspirations sites, versus having to login to each site if you happen to be working across more than one at a time.

  • We will be setting up an option to “trust your device” for a certain period of time before having to verify your identity again.

  • We will also be setting up an automatic logout if inactive on the site for a set period of time.

We will provide additional information in next week’s WU once the implementation has fully rolled out. In the meantime, if you have questions, please feel free to contact us at [email protected].
